Langley Adult Literacy Options
This guide is intended to house information on ways to support adult literacy in Langley – whether you are a newcomer, refugee, Canadian citizen, permanent resident or visitor. The information listed is not all-encompassing and we encourage you to check out the websites of the agencies below for a more fulsome look at their literacy offerings.
There are many free programs in Langley that can help you improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills
One on One Learning
Program for Canadian-born adults and naturalized citizens. We can only serve adults who are not already accessing Adult Basic Education courses.
Community One-on-One Learning (COOL)
The Langley Literacy Network offers a free tutoring program for adults. Adult learners who want to improve their reading and writing skills are paired with a volunteer literacy tutor and meet weekly to improve their basic literacy skills learn more
English Language Classes
LINC Classes
New Directions English Language School provides the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program in Langley. Permanent Residents and Refugees are eligible for free LINC classes, which are offered at various times and levels and in both Langley and Aldergrove. Some childminding is available.

As of July 1 2025, New Directions will be relocating the main office and Stage 1 classes to a new location, # A101 – 20621 Logan Avenue, which is a block from the bus loop and 2 blocks from our current site.
It is in Baytree Plaza where Fraser Valley Continuing Education used to be on the 2nd floor, in A204, where we will have our Open Learning Centre! Downstairs, at A101, will be Registration, New LINC assessments, LINC 1 to 4 classes, and administration.
All other classrooms will remain at the Federal Building- 20408 Douglas Crescent.
Conversation Circles
Conversation Circles are free classes that will help you improve your English speaking and listening skills. Many Conversation Circles are drop-in small groups where you can meet new friends and practice your English skills.

Adult Basic Education
Kwantlen Polytechnic University – Academic and Career Preparation
Earn your BC Adult graduation diploma, upgrade your English, Math or Science skills, complete course prerequisites to enter University programs learn more
Literacy Communities – students with intellectual disabilities will learn and develop reading comprehension, social skills, financial math and computer skills. Contact 604-599-2964 or email [email protected]
Access Program for People with Disabilities – offers two 10 month options for adults with a permanent disability or a combination of learning difficulties. Students will participate in classes and have the opportunity to explore a variety of work experiences. These program options prepare students for employment, volunteer work or further education. English Language Studies Department – welcomes both newcomers to Canada and international students. If English is not your first language and you need to improve your reading and writing, listening and speaking skills, our ESL and academic preparation courses will help you. School District #35 – Adult Basic Education Program
Langley Education Centre is part of School District #35 (Langley) and offers secondary school options for teens and adults to continue and complete secondary education. They offer a variety of structured classes on a trimester model. Students can also take self-paced classes throughout the year, with registration ending mid April. Learn more

Fraser Valley Regional Library
Visit your Langley Libraries for help improving your reading or writing skills. We offer free access to computers, a wide range of adult learning materials (ADL Collection) and programs for the whole family. New Directions English Language School
New Directions English Language School is the perfect LINC option for permanent residents and refugees who have scheduling challenges due to work and/or family. Also, students can focus on individual skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading or Writing) that are the most important to their English learning goals.
