What is Literacy?

Literacy is more than the ability to read and write. Literacy is understanding numbers, filling out forms, understanding your prescription bottle, using a computer, knowing how to pay for parking, following a bus schedule, writing a grocery list. Literacy is embedded in every part of our lives, and it is essential to living a good life.

The Office of Literacy and Essential skills recognizes nine essential skills that are used in nearly every occupation and throughout daily life in different ways and at different levels of complexity.

"When we increase literacy we create jobs. Improve health. Reduce crime. Build stronger families. Make safer communities. Let's make literacy a priority in our community."
