Reading Buddies  

The Reading Buddies program helps Little Buddies become better readers, by pairing them with a volunteer Big Buddy. The Reading Buddies will meet for one hour each week to practice reading together. The Spring 2017 program will run from February - April 2017 and the Fall 2017 program will run from October - December 2017. 

Applications will be available September 1st at City of Langley, Fort Langley, Aldergrove and Walnut Grove Libraries. 

Little Buddies must:

  • Be in Grades 1, 2 or 3
  • Already be able to read. This program is not intended to teach children how to read.
  • Visit a participating library to fill out an application form, starting in September 2017

Big Buddies: 
Are you looking for volunteer hours and a valuable mentorship opportunity? Become a Big Buddy in the Reading Buddies program and a mentor a struggling reader. Big Buddies must:

  • be in Grades 10 - 12
  • complete a free Criminal Record Check
  • be available from October - December
Big Buddies Instructions for Completing Criminal Record Check

To participate as a volunteer in the Reading Buddies program, volunteers must undergo a Criminal Record Check with the Langley RCMP. This is to ensure the safety of our participants, and is free of cost to volunteers.Please bring the Criminal Record Check letter (available with your application at participating libraries) to Langley RCMP station and ask for a volunteer Criminal Record Check.

This process takes approximately a week to complete. Make sure to bring picture ID and ID/ or a peice of mail that shows your address. 
You can then pick up the completed check from the same RCMP station and bring it to the orientation session. Be sure to leave enough time for the check to be completed before the orientation.
